The final publishing stresses are almost over.

We now have Underground in print!

Just waiting on the two ADRIFT books to be finalised and the galleys delivered before setting all the new books onto AMAZON and global online bookstores.

It has taken a great deal of effort to try to format

each book, choosing fonts, layouts, wording for introductions, oh, and not to forget creating new

maps for those ebooks which hadn't yet been blessed with them.

Cartography is not an easy skill to learn, nor is going through each novel and placing towns on the new maps.

Still, it was worth doing for the series.

Now, to hope readers enjoy being able to follow the journey as they read.

Creating covers was another learning curve. It always seems that once you have hit 'SEND' or APPROVE the galley arrives with something you would like to change.

Still, they look fantastic and I am so thrilled to have had the images from Rachel Lewis photography to work with.

Matt Bryant was a perfect model for my hero. I am so glad Phill has epic skills in computer imagery and my family are always on hand for feedback.

Once I have a number of each book available I will try to organise a short book tour. I think at this stage I can talk about the writing process, the pitfalls and joys of publishing, how to create a fantasy world/series.

Once all books are 'published' I will post links to where they can be found online.

Otherwise signed books can be purchased from me, if you can cover postage.

Still working on the formatting for publishing, but going with a new look.
It is wonderful to think the series will be complete and 'real' soon.
Wendy Laharnar has worked tirelessly to fix formatting errors and double check margins and remove 'section breaks' etc.
Phill worked his magic to create the cover and enable the continuity with the series.
I am just grateful to those who have waited so long and have been so supportive.
Thank you.
I have been busy preparing for the Grassroots weekend in May.
It looks like it should be a huge success. Great workshops and a chance to meet and get to know other writers. So many wonderful presenters giving their time and knowledge in a lovely environment.

Rosalie Skinnerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15530160674372850136noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2399181899967961204.post-57212551825445358552019-03-03T10:27:00.001+11:002019-03-03T10:28:17.415+11:00On the Road to SELF PUBLISHINGIt is with great trepidation, excitement and gratitude that I am taking the reins and making the dream of having the series in print a reality.
With the help of Wendy Laharnar I have begun the epic task of making the six books not printed through Museitup Publishing into PRINT ready manuscripts.
Wendy has been tireless, helping ensure half a million words are spaced, formatted, edited, and reader ready.
When my hope was all but dissolved Wendy kept fanning the dying embers.
Now the flames have returned and I can see a result to all the waiting and hoping.

At present we are still double checking formatting. Getting each book into a template, checking page numbers, headings, margins... all the fun stuff that goes into making a galley error free. *Fingers crossed*

After so many years... it is going to happen. :)
Thanks To Wendy!
Last year 900 people turned up to enjoy this gathering of nerds, geeks and gaming enthusiasts. This year I have been invited to participate, both as a guest on a panel and as a stallholder.

I decided to sponsor the gathering, as you do, when you realise there are other like minded people out there, waiting to learn about your books.

At least, I hope they are waiting to discover the Chronicles.

Anyhow... as a sponsor I was asked to provide a logo.

So, here is what I now have created with the help of a talented artist/designer on FIVERR

I was hoping to have Book Two, EXILED: Winter's Curse available in print, in time for the event.
Sadly some scheduling mixup has prevented this from happening. Still, I am working on getting a short story available... A free read to whet the appetite and introduce some of the backstory to the Chronicles.
Wish me luck...
Time is ticking away.
Each day introduces new challenges to face and skills to learn.
Bring them on!!!
That is what life is all about, isn't it?
I have only known him for a year, but in that time he has been a wonderful influence on my life. We have communicated regularly, thanks to emails,
text messages and images.
His family have been warm and welcoming at I grieve with them at this sad time.

Although I am unable to attend John's funeral, I will be lighting a candle and planting a tree in his honour. Even though there is a dreadful sense of loss and shared grief, I have lots to be thankful for, and I have shared some of my thoughts on Lightning Quick Reads....

I will miss John, but I feel it was fate that brought us together even though it was late in John's journey. It was only this time last year that I discovered he was still living in Melbourne. My search through the regular channels had not been successful, but a friend's father worked his skills and found a John Bale in Melbourne. Turned out he was the right person. A wonderful, warm, passionate, intelligent and welcoming father I have been blessed to have met.

Rest In Peace John Bale.

You will be remembered with love and gratitude.

Your loving daughter Rosalie.

I have also talked about my meeting with John at Lightning Quick Reads,

You may know him better as Mike Abbot from Bless this House, the British sitcom with Syd James, but I know Robin Stewart from my time living in Yarramalong. I witnessed his love of the Australian bush, the animals and especially his horses and dogs. It came as no surprise to hear he had written A Life In The Wild. The story of an old man and his journey through life. The companions who keep him company, the dogs, horses, cats and their importance in his world.
<span style="color: #cfe2f3; font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="color: #cfe2f3; font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Robin has a unique voice as he writes. His descriptions and understanding of the animals and the landscape draw the reader into his world.
<span style="color: #cfe2f3; font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">I 'interviewed' Robin while he was hospitalised and recovering from a bout of ill health. His enthusiasm for his writing wasn't dampened. He asked for the interview to keep his mind active and off his surroundings.
<span style="color: #cfe2f3; font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">I hope his recovery is rapid and complete. There are more stories waiting to be written.
<span style="color: #cfe2f3; font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Meanwhile... Meet Robin Stewart as he talks about his latest book...

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="color: #cfe2f3; font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Robin, what do you hope people will take away from the story?
I think that inside all of us is an old something, be it a person an animal, or even a stuffed teddy bear. So with this tale it would be of great joy to me if the reader got lost in the ways of simplicity and occasional heartbreaks of what I consider to be normal living, if we have the opportunity to give it a chance to blossom. This does not have to be a fantasy, it can easily be a reality if only we can free ourselves to live it. Mother Nature is after all a ruler supreme, or so I personally would like to think.

<span style="color: #cfe2f3; font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">What genre would you put this book into?
I think maybe that is something for the readers imagination to decide, I just wrote the words.

<span style="color: #cfe2f3; font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Please tell us more about your affinity with the animals you shared time with.
That is a very hard question because as a kid I would visit the wolves in Regents Park zoo. Standing on what one would call the free side looking in, I tried to imagine what they saw when they looked at me. Did they think that they were on the free side and I was trapped in something that seemed to go on forever with no ending, so I was the one that was lost. I have always thought that the relationship between the animals I have had the good fortune to be involved with actually cared as much for me as I did for them, rightly or wrongly. It was, I suppose, part of my fantasy of having a friend that did not speak the same language yet could pass their feelings over to me with a glance or a twitch or even by turning their back on me, as if to say ,bullshit. I liked to think we were close. I know I missed and loved them whether they were there or not. They were a major part of my being.

<span style="color: #cfe2f3; font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">What inspired you to write "A Life in the Wild"?
It was there to be written. (I love Robin's answer.)
My head needed to have a clear out and I wanted to see what was in there, and out came all my friends. I just put them all together and wrote it down. Thanks to Val George, my editor and inward looker at my story, it became the book it is today. All of the animals are taken from reality. I consider myself lucky to have been able to be involved with them. I am lucky that they put up with my idiosyncrasies, even though to them they would probably have been simplicities. We are the ones who make things complicated. Mother Nature just rolls along repairing our mistakes or destroying our failings, hopefully before we destroy her rectifications. Gosh, that sounds deep. hehehe.
Very deep, but very like you!

<span style="color: #cfe2f3; font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Can you please explain your writing process?
My writing process is strange. I firmly believe that 'time', as we know it, is man made. So it does not matter to me if it is dark or light. I must admit I do prefer working through the night, only because there is a stillness that seems to surround me that I like. Yet I can just as easily work with the TV on, music on, anything happening around me is cool, except I find it very hard to continue on a thought process when it is interrupted by something or someone. Normally someone who I have no control over that just enters my special space. As with this book the confines of toads abode and takes me away from my fantasy.

I find that is more destructive to my writing than possibly hearing in the background that there has been a tidal wave. The wave is a passing part of information that travels into and out of the story, where as the interruption demanding my attention breaks all contact that I am involved with within the story per say. This might sound selfish, but it is my fantasy or my dream, or if you like my story, it has not been handed over yet so it is still very private and is in nurturing stage not in battle stations.
Sharing work before it is ready is always awkward. Like baring your soul, without a chance to strap on a mask.

<span style="color: #cfe2f3; font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">What do you do to prepare your story for publication?
Preparation is tricky. I was extremely lucky. There was only my editor and my publisher. There were no beta readers used and I was given the freedom to just let go and write. How lucky was that?
<span style="color: #cfe2f3; font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Free rein is what most writers dream of, Robin.
<span style="color: #cfe2f3; font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

I am busy working on my workshop notes for World Building and the panel discussion on Publishing, Ebooks and Self publishing.
The GRASSROOTS WRITERS' Weekend is already booked out. The program is amazing. The weekend should be a blast. Last year Dorrigo hosted a the inaugural weekend. This year Coffs Harbour Writers' Group is carrying on the tradition.

Preparations are going well and with the books now ordered and on their way my nerves have settled.

It is going to be fun.

I have even organised prizes and giveaways at the book launch, as incentive for people to attend. Does that sound desperate?

I am attending a book launch on Wed night, and there will be giveaways etc there. The author is with a mainstream publisher, with books on shelves and a marketing department behind her, so I don't think my incentives sound THAT desperate. ;)

I am a Grassroots Writer and happy with what I achieve. :)

To me the support and enthusiasm from my friends, readers, and the people I have met through my writing are important. They are the reason I write and work to help other authors.
Vayne is a light elemental and bounty hunter for the supernatural world. Her partners, Giovanni, a capricious fallen angel, and Donovan, a shape shifter with anger control issues, work with her during their rehabilitation. During the coldest winter Cincinnati has ever seen, the threesome run into a case where temporary, and violent insanity strikes powerful elementals seemingly at random. Vayne soon finds herself the victim instead of the hunter, and working on the wrong side of the conflict. How can Don and Gio pull her back from the brink? How will she reveal the perpetrator and bring him before the chopping block?
Six Father figures, Three Mothers, One Family…

FIRST POSTED ON 9th August 2013....

It’s funny how families evolve.

Try doing a family tree with six father figures and three mothers.

Ok, one set are in laws. So that’s easy. Still…

I haven’t really been careless, but I have lost four ‘fathers’, misplaced one and I am keeping tabs on another. I have more luck with mothers. My mother in law, now ninety two,(93) but doesn’t know it, is doing well. My adopted mother and birth mother are both thriving.

Losing my adopted father and father in law in the same year taught us about grief, but the memories that remain are of happy times.

My adopted Mum remarried and introduced a wonderful ‘Grandpa’ into the lives of my children. They grew up with his love surrounding them. We are all richer for having known him and been blessed with his love. He passed away the day after his eightieth birthday.

My ‘bonus’ family arrived via a letter from the Salvation Army. Discovering my birth mother, half sisters and their family is another story in itself… During a trip south to meet the family I was lucky to get to know and grow to love my birth mother’s husband. Sadly he passed away shortly after we met. Those few days were precious and a godsend.

Not lost, just misplaced. Perhaps one day I will learn more about who he was.

UPDATE: I have spoken to my birth mother about my birth father. I have a name but am still to go through the process of searching for him. I am told though that he was at times, a stage hypnotist. So, there you go. Another sliver of information regarding one of my 'dads'.
A beautifully written, very descriptive story of a complex tale combining both fantasy and science fiction, which is so full of act it certainly a real page turner. Full of wizards, witches, dragons and alien creatures sent to keep the main character, Caleath and his followers fighting to the very end of the series (1. Exiled: Autumn's Peril, 2.Exiled: Winter's Curse, 3. Exiled: The Legacy of Lathraine's Pledge & 4. Exiled: The Battle for Enderseer Hold). As soon as I finished one book I was straight into the next one.
So, what has been the most rewarding part of your journey to having a series released?

So far there have not been a lot of sales, but there have been a few. So that means that there is

someone out there reading the books. I don’t do this to sell a lot of books, but to have someone’s life be changed because they read my book. I haven’t heard of that happening yet and I may never hear, but just the thought that it could happen is enough reward.

You have some wonderful reviews. Would you like to share your favourite?
The last book of the Twelve Pillars series, The Sanctuary of the Nine Dragons, finally brings the story of the two kings of Ramajadinfull circle. In The Sanctuary of the Nine Dragons, the reader will find a story of hope and ultimate sacrifice. This adventure of Brandon and Joachim contains exiles, kidnappings and a loss of faith, all of which culminates into an epic final battle between good and evil.

Sidramah, the evil god, still has a strong hold on Brandon’s heart, and only a great sacrifice will free him from the bonds. Joachim, unwilling to give up the hope that one day Brandon will return to Asha, must abide by the Council’s decision to exile his brother. When news reaches Joachim of the likely death of Brandon and the kidnapping of his young son, Prince Airyn, he blames himself and neglects his country. Will the family’s next generation make the same mistakes as those before them, and is it too late for Brandon and Joachim to mend their relationship?

I love that this book focuses on the guardian dragons and the role they play in restoring Joa’s Faith in
Christina Weigand’s Twelve Pillars series, but I hope she doesn’t just stop there. The adventures of the next generation of the royals of Crato and Mahorg need to be told, and I can’t wait to read about them!

Sanctuary of the Nine Dragons is book 3 from author Christina Weigand in the continuing story of Palace of the Twelve Pillars and The Palace of Three Crosses. In a different land, a different realm the mystical kingdom, Crato is threatened along with the safety of the royal family Queen Maeve and King Joachim.

Here the twins Joachim and Brandon are pitted against each other as Brandon has turned to the dark
side and his brother is forced to strip him of his powers. He is banished to a far away island. On route to the island, Brandon’s ship has crashed in a violent storm and a family magic amulet turns up on the beach. Evil still lurks and devastation even with the report of Brandon’s death. Is Brandon’s magic so
powerful it can survive his death and is he really dead? This novel is wonderfully written as it will take you to a mystical realm far away with hints of medieval themes along with a good clean christian tone. I highly recommend this novel for middle grades to young adults. I loved the feeling of being swept away as Weigand has the ability to transport her readers to special realm with fantastical characters
They are fantastic reviews. You couldn't ask for better. Congratulations...

What has been the highlight of your marketing and promotion during the release of The Twelve Pillars?

Doing the interviews. They have made me think about things that may not have occurred to me during the writing, editing and publishing process. There have been a lot of interesting questions and it has been a lot of fun answering them and sharing them with my readers.
Interview questions make you think, don't they. Sometimes you learn things about yourself, while sharing information with others.

No journey is without pot holes, what is most embarrassing thing that has happened to you as a writer?

Probably the most embarrassing thing is missing a deadline or forgetting to get info to people that
agreed to help promote my books.
So glad to know I am not alone with those times of ... what were we talking about.. oh yeah, forgetfulness...

What has inspired you the most, to keep writing?

When I was working on the trilogy, the thing that kept me going was seeing where the story was going.

I’m a pantster so I never know where the story is going before I write it, so seeing where the characters are going to take me is always a wild ride. Now again I am working on a series so between God’s nudging and the characters leading I am kept moving through the story. The story needs to be told.

It is a wonderful feeling to have a story that needs, demands, to be told. Makes writing a pleasure.

What is your five year plan?

Like my writing, my life is a take it as I go proposition. By the end of this year I would like to see at least one of the books in my new series visiting publishers. I have a Bible study that is available in ebook format, so one of my goals for the year is to get it into print.

I guess if I had to pick five year goals it would be to finish my current series and get it published.

Good luck with your plans. I am sure you will achieve them. Finishing a series is always a great feeling. Getting published... well, that's the icing on the cake.

What are you working on now?

As I already mention I am currently working on a new series that will follow the course of the history of Christianity starting at the end of Jesus’s days on earth and culminating during our current times. It is a YA Christian fantasy that my dragons will be a part of. I am also co-writing a middle grade fantasy series with my granddaughter and a beginning chapter book with my teen daughter and granddaughter.

Writing a novel with your granddaughter and daughter would be lovely. So good to know they both share you love of storytelling.

Thanks for being on my blog.
What did you get out of this year's NANO?

First year I have entered this adventure. It has been terrific to have the motivation and support to get a novel written within a specific time.
Now I have a story ready to flesh out and edit.
Wonderful to have shared with other authors and have the Muse awake and active.
Special thanks go to Wendy Laharnar for her prompting... a few swift kicks when things were going slow, helped immensely.
Also to Robyn Veugen for arranging several Write In's where words were written and support shared. A great motivational tool.
And to Leonie Henschke and Robyn Veugen for making the week long writers' retreat in Noosa a brilliant success and enjoyable time away.
Now, to work on the manuscript and think about what to write next.

Congratulations to all who have participated in NANO this year. Even if you didn't get the whole 50k words down, I know those who have worked on their writing will have found the experience worthwhile. Well done.

I think for some there are a few hours left. It's Australia and there are only a few hours left before December rolls in.

If you have dropped in, please feel free to talk about your NANO achievements in the comments. And again...Congratulations... well done. Any word written towards NANO is a bonus.

So Stuart,
what inspired you to write Godland?

Stuart:
Actually, Rosalie, it started with the characters. I had an idea of four very
different characters: a bitter farmer, a troubled teen girl, a ruthless
corporate marauder, and a failed, gay entrepreneur. I thought it might be fun
to see how they might be connected. The interwoven, puzzle plot followed. Now,
of course, when I say “fun,” I probably have a different concept of “fun” than
most people.

Do you wake
at night, reliving scenes? Tormented by the lives you create for your
characters?

Stuart:
Honestly, as I wrote this book, it put me in a very dark place at times.
Usually I like to insert humor into my novels. Not so much this one.

In Godland
the idea of escape and survival are important. Each of the characters have
their own ways of coping with the trauma of their previous lives. You capture
their resourcefulness and coping mechanisms well. Some more successful than
others. Have you studied psychology? How do you get into your character’s heads
so well? You make them seem very real.

Stuart:
Great question, Rosalie! Yes, escape and survival is an important theme of the
book. Especially the parallels of physical and psychological escape. Something
every character in the book strives for. The past forms the future. For
everyone. And, yeah, psychology was my under-study in college. Can’t say I drew
too much on that though. Most of the book’s just my putting myself into the
characters’ mind-set, then letting it rip. As I said, “fun!”

Family and
family ties play a huge part in GODLAND. Some of the ties are not what most
family values promote. GODLAND isn’t based on any real or living situations is
it? You had me wondering if there are places where the type of people in
GODLAND might really exist.

Stuart:
Well, my burden is Kansas. I live in this Godforsaken state. I’m embarrassed at
some of the primitive beliefs and practices that go on here. For cryin’ out
loud, we still have an active Ku Klux Klan chapter, lots of dark secrets and
horrific situations going on in the farmlands, a violent mob presence in Kansas
City, black magic worshippers, antiquated political beliefs and laws. Recently,
a law was passed allowing restaurant owners to refuse service to people who
they believe may be gay. You believe that? In my books, I’m trying to expose
the hidden, awful underbelly of the Midwest, even though the loudest proponents
of Kansas’s Norman Rockwellian surface—wholesome family values--are the biggest
hypocrites. Don’t visit Kansas!

The names
of each character in the family are straight from the Bible. Are you a
religious person? Or do you see religion as being an obsession like it is for
Edwin. Obviously naming his children after characters from the good book,
didn’t help him raise them well, or them to be righteous. Although, in their
darkest hours, some of the players in the drama find a germ of compassion.

Stuart:
LOL. I think compassion’s key, Rosalie. If characters don’t have it, or find it
eventually, then I find books like that generally hard to get behind. True
horror comes from humanity’s foibles, something awful, inescapable. Yet
humanity also shines sometimes when hidden reservoirs of compassion surface. Am
I religious? Not particularly. Mostly because I had it beaten into me (not
literally) as a kid. A rebel, I suppose. But if I’m writing tales set in creepy
Kansas, I can’t escape religious themes. Part of the general make-up. Funny
thing about the names, Rosalie. At first I had three integral characters named
Peter, Paul and Mary. My wife caught it, said, “uh, no.” Took me a minute
before I realized what she was on about.

I came away
from reading GODLAND wondering how an author can write such dark and traumatic
stories. I don’t usually watch horror movies… I really don’t understand when
there is no logical reason for violence, or supernatural haunting/violence.
GODLAND transcends that nonsensical horror by bringing its characters to life
with deep motivation and logical reasoning for each and every action. Makes it
all much scarier. My hat goes off to you for creating a dark landscape with a
story that pulls the reader into every scene and has them on the edge of their
seats, ready to run, as they turn each page.

That’s not
a question…

Stuart: I
hear ya’, Rosalie. I agree logic is important. As for how I write such dark and
traumatic tales? Well, actually, it’s probably the darkest of my books. As I
said before, I do like humor believe it or not. This book is exorcising demons,
I suppose. Kinda’ like most of my books. (My YA series deals with my awful high
school years of bullying and senseless violence). And Edwin’s loosely (VERY
loosely) based on my grandfather. Didn’t know him very well, he died early. But
my dad told me lots of awful tales about him. Of course he wasn’t as bad or
evil as Edwin. But he had his moments of mental and physical abuse.

Final
question is how does an author capable of writing GODLAND, turn back to writing
for young adults?

Stuart: Not
sure I’m turning back to writing YA books. Godland was actually the second book
I wrote. But I had to let it gestate for a while. And I have about four more
adult suspense thrillers on dock. Then again, I have an idea for a couple of YA
books. Another Tex, the Witch Boy tale set in college. And a story about
Satan’s son being banished to a Midwest high school for being too lenient on
the damned souls in hell. Many laughs (I hope) will ensue.

the voice of a teenage girl. The change of voice shows the level of expertise
you have mastered in your writing. Congratulations.

creatures–one you have to constantly walk on eggshells around--known as a

Um, shamelessly eavesdropping. Probably my biggest challenge, that book.
Writing POV from two very different teen girls’ perspectives. Very fun, too.
