How would your character react....

Watching this video and listening to the calm breathing of the cameraman, I was prompted to wonder about reactions to situations.
What seems incredible and extremely dangerous to me, obviously isn't an adrenaline pumping event to the diver or the sharks.
So, writing a character's reactions must depend on their level of knowledge, experience, courage, bravado and common sense.
Like driving.. it's dangerous. Just reading the statistics proves that. Does it take courage to get behind the wheel? Perhaps.. but we have experience.. We (hopefully) treat our driving with respect and extreme care. Don't we? Not bravado...
Diving is a dangerous sport. Sharks CAN be dangerous. So we immediately associate their presence with an element of fear. (at least I do)
These sharks change my perception. They obviously aren't dangerous.
The Grey Nurse shark is badly maligned if it is given  a fear factor. These creatures prove how little they want to maul or attack a human.
Even knowing they are minding their own business... my adrenaline would be pumping.
Swimming, snorkelling among large fish, kingfish on Lord Howe Island... made me nervous..
Anyhow.. this isn't about me.. I am just re assessing the ideas of reactions.
What we count as courage, could just be confidence in collected knowledge. But does that take anything away from our character? To be experienced and to get to this level of expertise has taken courage?
Ok.. just thinking aloud as I count how many sharks are swimming within range of the lens.

Review for Exiled: The Legacy of Lathraine's Pledge...

I’ve just finished reading my very first book on my new Kindle, and thoroughly enjoyed the experience in every respect. The Kindle is really neat, but soon I forgot all about it as I dove into the third book of Caleath’s Chronicles. All the characters have become good friends by now, except of course for those I love to hate.
The Legacy of Lathraine’s Pledge is beautifully and vividly written. Rosalie Skinner comes up with amazing descriptions, unique metaphors and comparisons that make you smile or send a shiver down your back. The ebb and flow of intense, moving moments lightened by humorous encounters or witty dialogues carried me away on a wonderful journey in an intriguing world where fantasy meets science fiction. Highly recommended, but you better start from the beginning so as not to miss anything! The first book is Exiled: Autumn’s Peril.
So far this series is only available as ebook in many formats. One of the reasons why I bought that Kindle.

The Symbolism behind Alchemist and the Unhewn Stone.. revealed.

Heather Haven's blog, 'This and That' has hosted Wendy Laharnar as she discusses the symbolism behind her award winning YA novel the UNHEWN STONE

Welcome Wendy Laharnar author of Unhewn Stone

There is a lot of information offered. Learning about the Alchemist and the details of ancient wisdom is brilliant. I love how fact and fiction tie in together.
This interview demonstrates to those who are not writers, just how thorough an author's research and intimate knowledge of their subject has to be, before they put pen to paper.
At any time, even in writing 'Fantasy' an author who is serious about their craft will admit that gathering the knowledge and doing the research behind their work, probably took a lifetime to collect.
Just putting the words together in a story can take years... what goes into the background takes a lifetime.

It is no wonder The Unhewn Stone has won readers around the world. It is the sort of Young Adult book both young readers and adults will keep coming back to. Each re read brings out more from this fascinating story.

Also, showing her multi genre talent, Wendy has a science fiction short story out now...
Happiness Guaranteed. Five star ranking from this reader!!

Coming soon is Wendy Laharnar's YA novel, Billy the Bonsai Bull. Another great story, in a different genre. Don't miss this one!! Look for it in February from Museitup Publishing.

THANK YOU....

To all those wonderful people who helped get Exiled: Autumn's Peril into second place in BEST SCIENCE FICTION FANTASY book for 2011 in the Preditors and Editors Annual Readers Poll.

From the moment I found someone had nominated my book, to the closing moments, the thrill of being among the 90 odd books in the voting line up was immense.

Knowing so  many people took the time to jump through the hoops and help promote Exiled is moving. It's great to have supporters, readers and long suffering friends and family all helping to get the Chronicles out there and into the hands of readers.

Museitup Publishing has done well for being little more than a year old.

While I am thanking people, I must also thank all who voted for Wendy Laharnar's The Unhewn Stone too. For both best Young Adult novel and also Best cover art.

The Unhewn Stone came in third for novel and second for cover art.

Two very happy Aussie authors. :)
Very grateful and humble, but mostly happy.
Thanks again.. everyone who voted and spread the word.
