Have you heard about Billy Cooper's Awesome Nightmare....

Hi Rosalie and thank you so much for having me today.

I am thrilled to be visiting with you.

I would like to talk about my short story Billy Cooper’s Awesome Nightmare – The Wickware Sagas.

It’s for the MG kiddos and it’s a time travel adventure.  I have sent in four other stories and the plan is to have a book, starring  kids of today coming face to face with historical legends of yesteryear.  I am really excited about this project with Billy Cooper starring in Volume One.

                                                            * * * *

Seventh grader, Billy Cooper, watches as the clock in his last hour class ticks by at a snail’s pace.  Old lady Wickware’s mouth is moving but Billy is paying no attention. History was not a favorite subject of his and besides it’s Friday and he has baseball practice, right after this class, if that darn bell would ever ring.

Billy had heard the rumors about Miss Wickware.  Weird things happened in her class.  Lights flickered, the radio would turn on by itself, electricity would shoot out of the end of her fingers, things happened to different students, but nobody was actually talking.

It was bunk!   Miss Wickware was a nice old lady that cared about history and her mission on earth was to boar Billy to death.

“And this oral report will be due on Monday.”  That got Billy’s attention.  “Everyone will draw a subject out of this box.  It does not have to be long, just factual.”

Among the grumbling of the other students, Billy’s mind was going over all the things he had planned for the weekend…. ball practice, the new Matt Damon movie, and fishing with his dad.

It’s Billy’s turn to draw his subject.  William Tell.  Who was William Tell?

No worries.  A ten-minute search on the computer and he will bluff his way by on this assignment. The bell rings and Billy smiles as he rushes out the classroom door.

His attitude takes a different turn when he wakes up the next day in front of William Tell’s home in the fourteenth century.  How did he get here and the bigger question is how will he get home????

                                                            * * * *

Dum da dum dum dummmmmmm – LOL!

Pumpkin or Turnip

The humble turnip was the original vegetable used for creating the 'jack o lantern' but when the custom moved to America the larger and softer pumpkin became the popular choice for lanterns.
Carving the pumpkin has been a custom in America since around 1837 to celebrate harvest time, and wasn't associated with Halloween until the mid to late 19th century.
So, there you go. The humble turnip was ousted by the pumpkin.
I would rather carve than eat turnip any day. Pumpkin though, especially pumpkin soup or baked pumpkin is one of my favourite vegetables, all year round.

Winter time, with fresh baked bread and warm pumpkin soup sounds cozy. Although here in Australia our seasons arrive in different months, our recipes are similar. Right now, as October winds up and November looms, we are preparing for a hot summer. Thank goodness the ocean breeze lifts the humidity and cools us as the warm winds from our vast interior bring stifling heat.
Already the bushfire season has started in earnest. The pool is looking more inviting each day.

Thoughts of harvest festivals and spirits seeking vengeance are far from our thoughts as the time for Trick or Treating arrives.

The cupboards are stocked though, for All Hallow's Eve.

Not a turnip in sight. Not even a carved pumpkin here. Still... the kids love the dressing up and we enjoy seeing them celebrating Halloween.

As a Halloween TREAT to readers, EXILED: Autumn's Peril is available to download FREE from Amazon. Have you grabbed your copy yet? Please let your friends know this offer will last till 31st OCT. Then the free 'door' into Caleath's the world closes again!

Halloween.. Origins...

So, Halloween is being promoted aggressively in Australian shops this year. Alongside aisles of Christmas decorations we have elaborate pumpkin lights, lamps, figurines, chocolates, cobwebs, witch motifs etc etc.
Halloween...when the border
between the living and the dead opens...

The trick or treat custom has been gaining popularity here too. Ten years ago having children arrive dressed up as ghouls and wanting sweets was a rarity. Now it's wise to be prepared.

Looking at the origins of the commercial hype the blame tends to immediately be focused on the American hysteria generated during Halloween. This trend towards Trick or Treating seems to come from the USA but the preoccupation with Halloween dates from a different continent and custom base.

There are several sources of celebration. So although the American's have taken the commercial side of the night to levels unparalleled, they are only borrowing from previous traditions. We in Australia are competing for the precious commercial dollar and are following hard in their footsteps.

Despite the origins, some stories are quite dark and scary, fairies swapping children in their cots... etc, the spirits of the dead returning... the children seem to enjoy dressing up and overdosing on sugar.

As long as they don't bounce off my walls when they have consumed their ration of sugar, it's ok with me!

As a treat, no tricks involved, I am offering Book One in the Chronicles of Caleath, FREE on Amazon for five days leading up to Oct 31st.
If you have not yet discovered this epic fantasy science fiction series... take this opportunity to join Caleath and his adventures FREE.

Happy Halloween.
Offer opens on Oct 27th USA time.. so allow for global time zones. Thanks.

BOOK ONE

Exiled: Autumn's Peril is the first book in Rosalie Skinners's Chronicles of Caleath.
"So before you start reading this one, be aware that it's highly
addictive and you'll crave the next book in the series. The good news is: the next seven books are supposed to be released in monthly intervals by MuseItUp Publishing.

Autumn's Peril weaves an intriguing tale where sci-fi meets fantasy. A planet still in its middle ages becomes the setting for a vicious real life game transmitted to an entertainment-craving audience spread through the federation of advanced worlds. Former Game Master and champion Caleath fights for his life in an archaic world, while the vengeful organizer tightens the net around him, not to mention an ignorant local mage getting in his way.

Caleath is a nicely ambiguous character, not your foolhardy hero but a man fighting for survival while trying to preserve his humanity. The last thing he needs is an accidental hostage, but even she can't help rooting for him. As their fates become entwined, a troubled Tristan and Isolde romance unfolds.

Fast-paced and vividly written, the story takes unexpected twists that keep you turning the pages. Even though you find yourself on a roller coaster you can always trust never to be thrown off. Lean back and enjoy the ride.

Book one offers a satisfying end while it keeps you longing for more and teases with hints at what else lies in stock for our exiled reluctant hero." Edith Parzefall.Germany. Multi published.
